There are multiple definitions for what a farm is. The Oxford Dictionary defines it as “an area of land and its buildings used for growing crops and rearing animals, typically under the control of one owner or manager.” The USDA defines a farm as “any place that produced and sold—or normally would have produced and sold—at least $1,000 of agricultural products during a given year.” But most would agree that farmland is one or more acres that can grow food or raise animals, usually for profit.
But beyond that a farm can range from 1 acre to 10,000 acres. It can include a small rancher with an extra large garden, some chickens and maybe a cow or two. Or it could be an expansive operation with multiple barns, large tractors, and dozens of employees.
The History of Farms
Farmland has been around for centuries. Specifically in the USA, farms were what nearly all of the colonist first lived on when they moved to the new land in search of new opportunities. And farmland continues to cover the majority of the USA. Our society relies on the food grown on farmland, and has through all of our history.
